![]() In fact, buying Ryu in Smash 4 marked the first time I’ve ever spent money on added downloadable content. This is madness!Īs a diehard Street Fighter fan, I was ridiculously pumped when Ryu was included as a DLC fighter in Smash 4. I mean, Jesus, they even have the Duck Hunt dog and R.O.B. For those of us who grew up watching schlocky cartoons like Captain N: The Game Master, this is a dream come true. ![]() With the likes of Little Mac, the Hero from Dragon Quest, Mega Man, Pit, and Simon Belmont now all playable fighters-plus Bomberman and Excitebike appearing as Assist Trophies-it really feels like the NES era is fully represented in all its 8-bit glory. The inclusion of Spirits and a whole new story/adventure mode are big differentiators too.Īs crazy as Smash has always been, the sheer number of characters included this time around-including every fighter that’s ever been playable previously-is legitimately staggering. For my money, this definitely feels like a brand new entry in the Smash series. And real gameplay changes too-not just new fighters, stages, and such. Honestly, Smash 4 had been so solid that merely an updated version of that game would’ve been fine by me, but they’ve added so, so much to Ultimate. At this point though, we can put that argument to bed. Due to the many similarities in characters, stages, and gameplay, a sizable contingent of players had called it “Smash 4.5”, an upgraded version of the last game. Feel free to disregard if you’re not into it.įirst off, before this game was released there was much discussion over whether it should be considered a port of Super Smash Bros for WiiU/3DS (aka Smash 4), or a true sequel. It appears that playing with particular characters helps unlock other specific ones. That said, it’s been a year since the game dropped and I’ve played like 100 hours of it-with much of that in single-player modes, so not exactly the main event-and I have a few thoughts I’d like to share. Update: Players have started unlocking characters (a week early!) and the table below has been updated with the information we know so far. Finally, if you would like to comment on the unlock requirements for a certain character, then feel free to use the comments section at the end of this guide. We do know that DLC characters are planned and these will likely be added in due course. The table below contains a complete list of the 74 characters in Smash Bros for the Nintendo Switch. This is true across all of the game modes such as World of Light (the new Adventure mode), Classic, Smashdown and Tournament mode. The same principles exist in Ultimate, requiring players to put in enough hard earned game time to unlock new and exciting fighters. In the older Smash games, players unlocked characters by completing milestones such as playing x number of vs matches or performing x number of smashes. Echo characters are placed side by with their original counterparts. They are similar in appearance but offer slightly different stats. For example, the Daisy character is an Echo of Princess Peach. In case you're wondering, Echo characters are as the name suggests, similar versions of existing characters. Unlike the older Smash games where the unlock requirements were often insane (many many hours of game time), the unlock requirements for Smash Ultimate are more accessible to everyone. The other 66 characters, which include both Echo and Mii characters, are unlocked by playing the game in different ways, in particular completing milestones across the various modes. ![]() They are: Mario, Donkey Kong, Link, Samus, Yoshi, Kirby, Fox and Pikachu. These fighters are reminiscent of the original 8 characters from the Nintendo 64 version of Smash Bros. At the beginning of the game, players start with a default set of 8 fighters. Crossover characters are also on the roster such as Sonic, Bayonetta and Snake. Many of Nintendo's famous characters make an appearance in Smash Ultimate including Mario, Peach, Donkey Kong, Kirby, Mega Man, Ryu, Ken, Link and Pikachu to name just a few. In this guide you'll find instructions for unlocking every fighter on the Nintendo Switch roster. Super Smash Bros Ultimate contains 77+ playable characters, the majority of which are gradually unlocked as players progress through the game.
